Læger fra Rigshospitalet har analyseret sædprøver fra 2.850 unge københavnske mænd, og resultatet er alt andet end opløftende. Næsten fire ud af 10 mangler ”krudt i bøssen” og vil opleve problemer med at føre slægten videre. For at undgå misforståelser eller fejlfortolkninger har de danske læger bedt både finske og amerikanske kolleger om at checke resultaterne, og de bekræfter danskernes konklusion.
Vi er rystede
Hos Foreningen for Ufrivilligt Barnløse er man rystet over nyheden, og formand Helle Eckeroth udtaler blandt andet til Berlingske Tidende, at det handler om at skaffe viden om årsagerne til, hvorfor man er ufrivilligt barnløs. ”Hvis fire ud af ti mænd har lav sædkvalitet, så er det nu om nogensinde, at der bør føres flere penge ind i fertilitetsforskning,” siger hun.
Formanden for Folketingets sundhedsudvalg, Birthe Skaarup (DF), er enig og ser også, at man giver midler til forskning i årsagerne til den ringe sædkvalitet.
Kendte faktorer
I modsætning til hvad mange tror, er dårlig sædkvalitet ikke blot et spørgsmål om antallet sædceller men derimod om sædcellernes funktionsduelighed. Ifølge afdelingslæge Niels Jørgensen fra Rigshospitalets afdeling for vækst og reproduktion kan hormonsforstyrrende stoffer fra eksempelvis kosmetik, som de vordende mødre anvendte under graviditeten, have bidraget til problemet. Det samme gælder, hvis gravide ryger. Et andet bud er phtalater, som er skadelige kemikalier i blandt andet plastblødgørende stoffer.
Selen-mangel
Der findes desuden forskning, der ser på bestemte næringsstoffer med en central betydning for sædkvalitet. Britiske forskere har for eksempel peget på sporstoffet selen, som blandt andet støtter nogle særlige selen-afhængige proteiner (selenoproteiner) med betydning for dannelsen af normale sædceller. Har man for lidt selen i blodet, kan det føre til deforme sædceller med reduceret svømmeevne. En skotsk undersøgelse1 fra 1998 viste, at når unge infertile mænd fik tilskud af selen, producerede de sædceller med langt bedre bevægelighed (motilitet). Det lykkedes faktisk for 11 procent af forsøgsdeltagerne at blive fædre som følge af behandlingen.
Danmark har et relativt lavt selenindhold i kosten, fordi landbrugsjordens selen-indhold ligger lavt i forhold til andre dele af verden som eksemepelvis USA.
Et europæisk problem
I Finland har man tilsyneladende også observeret forringet sædkvalitet hos de unge mænd, omend ikke i samme omfang som her i Danmark. Noget kunne tyde på, at nordeuropa er særligt udsat for selenmangel, og det harmonerer fint med en artikel2, som den britiske selenforsker, professor Margaret Rayman fra University of Surrey, offentliggjorde tidligere på året. Her fremhævede hun, hvordan især europæere synes at have mindre selen i blodet, og at der ville kunne forventes visse sundhedsmæssige fordele ved at øge selenindtaget netop i vores del af verden.
Energi til sædcellerne
Et andet stof, som tilsyneladende spiller en afgørende rolle for sædcellernes funktionsdygtighed, er det vitamin-beslægtede stof, coenzym Q10. Iranske forskere offentliggjorde i år resultaterne af en dobbelt-blind placebo-kontrolleret undersøgelse3, hvor infertile mænd i 26 uger fik enten 200 mg coenzym Q10 pr. dag eller identiske snydepiller (placebo). Det viste sigt, at Q10-behandlingen førte til signfikante forbedringer i antallet af sædceller samt sædcellernes form og bevægelighed. Coenzym Q10 har endvidere betydning for sædcellernes fremdrift, da det er en nødvendig faktor for cellers produktion af energi. Sædceller behøver relativt store energimængder for at kunne svømme.
