Her fik man endnu engang bekræftet den livsvigtige betydning af selen – et mineral, som virker forebyggende på kræft, gør en forskel ved PTSD og endda – til stor glæde for dem, som kan lide fisk – ser ud til at uskadeliggøre kviksølv i kroppen.

Selvom det er 200 år siden, at den svenske kemiker Jöns Jacob Berzelius opdagede selen, er det først inden for nyere tid, at udforskningen af dette livsvigtige mineral og sporstof for alvor har taget fart. Midt i august i år stimlede forskere fra hele verden sammen og fremlagde den nyeste videnskabelige viden om selen. En af de ting, der generelt lader til at være enighed om, er, at vi europæere ikke får nok selen fra føden.
Fordobling nødvendig
Ud fra kostanalyser og blodprøver har forskere fundet frem til, at gennemsnitlig europæisk kost tilfører rundt regnet 40-50 mikrogram selen dagligt. Det er tæt på den mængde, man blandt andet her i Danmark anbefaler som dagligt indtag. Problemet er dog, at anbefalingerne ikke er justeret til de faktiske beregninger af, hvor meget en voksen mand eller kvinde behøver.
Kræftforebyggelse
Flere undersøgelser, herunder en dansk undersøgelse fra 2015 udført i samarbejde med Kræftens Bekæmpelse, afslører nemlig, at man skal indtage omtrent 100-125 mikrogram selen dagligt for at kunne mætte selenoprotein P, som er et af i alt 25-30 forskellige selenafhængige proteiner med betydning for helbredet. Selenoprotein P har blandt andet visse funktioner, som er relevante for kræftforebyggelse.
Selentilskud kan være en ide
Blandt forskerne, der talte ved konferencen i Stockholm, var der bred enighed om, at 100-125 mikrogram selen dagligt var en fornuftig anbefaling, som lænede sig op ad den selenforskning, der er offentliggjort inden for de senere år. Det vil med andre ord sige, at en dansker med nogenlunde varieret kost med fordel kan tage et selentilskud som supplement for at være på den sikre side. Her er det vigtigt at understrege, at det skal være en form for selen, som kroppen har let ved at optage. Den danske selengær, SelenoPrecise, som indeholder en bred vifte af forskellige organiske selenkilder (flere end 20), kan dokumentere, at knap 90 procent af selenindholdet bliver optaget i kroppen.
