Omega-3 hjælper i omsætningen af fedtsyrer og dæmper den inflammationsfremmende PGE2, som er kendt for at være medårsag til, at fx allergi fra luftveje og fordøjelse udvikles. Man fokuserede især på børn med risiko for at udvikle høfeber, astma, mavebesvær og allergi overfor fx æg, hvede og mælk.
145 gravide kvinder med allergi i den nærmeste familie deltog i forsøget. Halvdelen fik omega-3-fedtsyrer (Bio Marin fra Pharma Nord) og den anden halvdel fik placebokapsler. Forsøget stod på gennem alle ni måneder af graviditeten og der blev foretaget målinger af immunglobulinet IgE undervejs og flere gange efter fødslen for at holde øje med omega-3-niveauet hos moderen også under amningen.
Der var et tydeligt målbart resultat
Gravide, som havde fået omega-3-fedtsyrer som tilskud undervejs fik børn som havde meget lavere risiko for at udvikle allergisymptomer, også når de blev teenagere. Forsøget viste en signifikant hjælp gennem hele barndommen og ikke kun for de nyfødte.
Fedtsyrer i fostertilstanden giver større intelligens og mindre allergi hos barnet senere i livet. Så håndfast kan det siges, når forskere fra Schweiz og Sverige kigger på, hvad gravide indtager af mad, og hvordan deres børn senere udvikler sig, og hvad sygdom angår. Og altså også intelligensen…
