 Grøn stær – også kaldet glaukom – er den primære årsag til irreversibel blindhed og synsnedsættelse. Der findes ikke nogen helbredende behandling, men forskere kan være på sporet af noget nyt.

Tanken om at blive blind skræmmer de fleste. Ikke desto mindre er knap 100.000 danskere i behandling for glaukom også kaldet grøn stær, som er den primære årsag til, at folk får indskrænket synsfeltet for til sidst helt at miste synet. Behandlingsmulighederne er ganske begrænsede, så enhver ny opdagelse bliver fulgt med spænding fra sidelinjen, og forskere er måske på sporet af noget brugbart, som ser ud til at have en virkning.

Med den nye viden om coenzym Q10 og stoffets rolle i forbindelse med lidelsen kan der dog være en åben dør til en helt ny forståelse af denne øjensygdom. En af de ting, som forskerne især har peget på, er, at cellerne i nethinden er meget sårbare over for defekter i mitokondrierne, som er cellernes bittesmå energifabrikker.

 

Hjælper mod hjertesvigt

Netop i forbindelse med cellernes energiomsætning har coenzym Q10 en allerede kendt og dokumenteret rolle. Det blev blandt andet påvist inden for et helt andet område, nemlig hjertesvigt. Hjertemusklen er ligeledes et af de kropsvæv, som har et ekstremt stort energibehov. I den danske Q-Symbio-undersøgelse viste præparatet Bio-Qinon Q10 en positiv indvirkning på patienter med hjertesvigt ved at sænke deres risiko for at dø af hjertesvigt med 43 % samtidig med at styrke selve hjertemusklen, så den pumpede med øget kraft.

 

Defekte mitokondrier – en rød tråd?

Der er i det hele taget mere og mere forskning, som kredser omkring dette med defekte mitokondrier (mitokondriedysfunktion), som ser ud til at være en rød tråd for mange sygdomme. Grøn stær samt hjertesvigt er foreløbig to sygdomme, hvor vejen er banet for yderligere forskning.
