Den menneskelige hjerne behøver selen for at fungere, og derfor er det især afgørende for ældre at få nok af stoffet. Ny forskning afslører dog forskelle hos mænd og kvinder.

Der er mange forskelle på mænd og kvinder, ikke mindst når det gælder deres måde at tænke på. Det fremgår blandt andet af et forsøg med selen, hvor forskere så på, hvordan det livsvigtige sporstof indvirkede på de to køn i en større undersøgelse med 984 mænd og 1.032 kvinder. Forsøgsdeltagerne var en del af den omfattende amerikanske NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Survey)-undersøgelse.

Hjalp kun hos mænd

Alle deltagere fik målt deres blod-indhold af selen og blev desuden bedt om at gennemføre forskellige kognitive tests, hvor de blandt andet skulle læse og huske ord, genkende dyr og matche tal med symboler. Interessant nok observerede forskerne en positiv sammenhæng imellem højere selen-indhold i blodet og bedre resultater i ordtesten og dyregenkendelsestesten. Denne sammenhæng så de dog udelukkende hos mænd – ikke hos kvinder.

Selens rolle i din hjerne

Selen indgår i 25-30 forskellige selenafhængige enzymer, der kaldes for selenoproteiner. Disse har en lang række funktioner i kroppen, og de har ligeledes opgaver i hjernen. Her er de blandt andet med til at styre

  • motorisk præstation
  • koordination
  • hukommelse
  • tankeproces (kognition)

Hvis man ikke får nok selen igennem kosten, kan det betyde, at hjernen kommer til at mangle nogle af de vigtige selenoproteiner, og det kan gå ud over bestemte hjernefunktioner.
