Berøring er afgørende for vores sundhed. Samtidig er der kun lidt seriøs og fokuseret forskning om berøring. I en artikel, der gennemgik forskningen i emnet, formidles det overraskende resultat, at der er et fald i opmærksomhedsfravær hos autister alene på grund af, at forældrene gav deres børn 15 minutters nakke-/skuldermassage før sengetid (= et fald fra 62 til 51 pct. efter en måneds massage).

Gad vide, om vi kan iagttage lignende effekter hos børn med ADD/ ADHD? Og gad vide, hvordan almindelige børn og voksne mennesker ville reagere på at få en 15 minutters nakke-/skuldermassage hver aften før sengetid i en måned?
I vores arbejde med psykoterapi og massage har vi længe været nysgerrige på berøring. Vi erfarer igen og igen, at der er et stort potentiale i at arbejde med et uroligt nervesystem gennem berøring.
Omsorgsmassage
En omsorgsmassage har tre dele: en samtale, en massage og en afrunding.
Først fortæller klienten lidt om, hvad der fylder for tiden. For det menneske, hvis sind er fyldt af tanker, handler det om at lufte tankerne lidt. Man letter lidt på kedlen og synker lidt længere ned i stolen. Ankommer. For det menneske, der er trist, handler det om kontakt. At der rent faktisk sidder et andet menneske, som er oprigtigt nærværende og interesseret i at lytte. For begge handler det om at få sat ord på.
Herefter kommer selve omsorgsmassagen. Den foregår på briks, og først og fremmest handler det om at mærke sig selv gennem berøring. Det handler samtidig også om at være til stede og sansende på en afspændt måde. Derfor holder massøren også øje med, om klienten falder i søvn og vækker vedkommende, hvis det sker.
At slippe tankemylderet
Sagt på en anden måde handler det for den stressede om at slippe tankemylderet, fordi det er tankemylderet, der skaber et fravær af kontakt til sig selv, og at berøringer skaber konkret nærvær eller omsorg for den, der er trist.
Pointen er, at det at kunne sanse og mærke sig selv er vigtigt for at kunne skabe balance i sit energisystem. Meget stress handler om, at folk ikke får stoppet op undervejs i deres liv. Tempoet er for højt, man presser sig selv eller lader sig presse for længe af andre. Tempoet er langsomt i massagen, berøringerne er lette, hudens nerveceller aktiveres, og massøren er til stede med sit nærvær uden at prøve at få noget bestemt til at ske.
Sundhed, berøring og tryghed
Vi oplever, at berøring har en markant effekt på den mentale sundhed, så længe der er tryghed, for så giver berøringer øget velvære og skaber kontakt indadtil. Nogle gange betyder trygheden, at man tør mærke og opdage noget, der længe har været gemt eller glemt. Trygheden er altså en afgørende forudsætning, og tryghed opstår i nervesystemet. Vi bærer alle vores individuelle historie med os, og derfor kan vi ikke beskrive, at den her slags berøring resulterer i den her slags resultater.
Angst kan være traumet i forklædning
Peter har angst, og angsten kommer, når han lægger sig på sin højre side. Det har afgørende indflydelse på hans liv i forhold til at falde i søvn. Det er ni måneder siden, han sidst har ligget på højre side af kroppen. Han er anspændt og hele tiden bange for at komme til at rulle derover.
Angsten kom efter en lang periode, hvor Peter havde passet sin døende mor. Det pres, han havde været under, havde trigget angsten. I fællesskab med Trine undersøgte Peter nu, om der lå noget i hans livshistorie, som også kunne have betydning, og som måske havde lagret sig i hans krop.
Det gjorde der, for Peters far forlod ham og moren, da Peter var fire år. De næste to år kom faren indimellem og hentede Peter, kørte ham hjem til bedsteforældrene og efterlod ham der resten af dagen. En dag, da Peter på seks år blev hentet, sagde han til sin far: Skal jeg nu hjem til de gamle mennesker igen? Så trak hans far ham ud af bilen (holdt ham i et fast greb i højre øre) og sagde: Ja, og det bliver så sidste gang.
Det var sidste gang, Peter så sin far.
Nogle gange er det meget tydeligt, at kroppen husker traumatiske oplevelser, og det var det i dette tilfælde. For at kunne arbejde kropsligt med angsten var det helt afgørende for Peter at føle tryghed for at kunne nærme sig den højre side. Derfor blev det ”at holde om” centralt i massagen. Der blev arbejdet med at bevæge sig fra venstre mod højre og tilbage igen. Aftalen var at tjekke med ham undervejs. Han havde så ansvar for at sige til, hvis angsten blev voldsom.
I det øjeblik angsten begynder at rulle i ham, skiftes der tilbage til venstre side. Sådan arbejdes der i lang tid frem og tilbage, indtil det bliver lettere for Peter at slappe af. Det er både en måde at få angsten til at slippe og måske endnu vigtigere en måde, hvorpå han lærer at holde angsten ud. At trække vejret ind i den i stedet for at være bange for den og dermed få den til at stige.
Sundhed og personlige grænser
Sundhed handler også om at kunne mærke sine personlige grænser og at føle sig afgrænset. Det skaber tryghed at kunne sige ja og nej.
Hvad er en personlig grænse egentlig? Hvordan mærkes en grænse, og hvordan kan man reagere på den? Undlader man at lytte til en grænse, kan det have store personlige konsekvenser for sundheden. Fx kan det udløse stress og depression, hvis man for længe har været under pres og ikke har fået sagt nej.
Arbejder vi bevidst med grænser, vil de pege ind i mere frihed og en bedre mental sundhed. Og i et højere selvværd: For respekteres mine grænser, er jeg nok okay.
I massagen øver man grænser ved at mærke sig selv. Hvis noget føles ubehageligt, kan man flytte massørens hånd, sig selv eller sige noget. Men ingen begrundelse er nødvendig, og der kan handles på den umiddelbare intuitive fornemmelse af et nej. Noget mange mennesker ikke er vant til, fordi nej’er tit er forbundet med et “krav” om en begrundelse, og når begrundelsen så ikke har ord, føles det lettere at lade være med at reagere. På den måde undertrykkes mange nej’er. Dét tror vi, er en betydelig faktor for danskernes mentale usundhed.
Vi skal lære at stole på de signaler om de personlige grænser, vi modtager fra vores nervesystem, også selvom det kan føles lidt ubekvemt. Det kalder vi at lytte til ”ja og nej-sproget”. Begynde at handle bevidst i kontakt til det, der umiddelbart opstår her og nu. Ubevidste og unyttige reaktioner kan undersøges og blive bevidste. Fra det bevidste sted kan vi nu lære at bevæge os og danse med vores egen historie. Som Peter gjorde i eksemplet fra tidligere.
Forskerne konstaterer i artiklen, at berøring er helt centralt for spædbørns udvikling i de tidlige stadier af livet. Vi tror ikke, at behovet for hud-mod-hud bliver mindre, blot fordi vi bliver ældre.
Vi kunne godt tænke os at undersøge nogle hypoteser om berøring, eksempelvis:
- 15 minutters daglig nakke-/skuldermassage i starten af skoledagen vil have en markant effekt på indlæring
- daglig struktureret berøring over et år vil hæve succesraten for misbrugere, der gerne vil ud af deres afhængighed
Det handler måske bare om at genkalde sig noget, vi har glemt? Fx at berøring jo i sig selv ikke nødvendigvis har et formål ud over kontakt og nærhed og formidling af en følelse. Det er jo næsten banalt, at der er forskel på at få en knytnæve i ansigtet og et let strøg hen over armen, og at det sidste er at foretrække. På samme måde kan man kigge på det barn med ADHD, der hver eneste aften har svært ved at falde i søvn. Hjernen bliver lettere træt hos et barn med en opmærksomhedsforstyrrelse, og kroppen går i gang med at prøve at holde hjernen vågen. Nogle af disse børn ender dagen med en konflikt, inden de vrede går i seng. Vrede og raseri er også en måde at komme i kontakt med kroppen på, men ingen tvivl om, at de (og deres familier) ville foretrække 15 minutters let massage på ryggen, og at måden, børnene falder i søvn på, også afgør søvnens og drømmenes kvalitet.
