Tusindvis af danskere lider af duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed (MCS), og mange af dem lever helt isoleret for at undgå omverdenens stigende forbrug af kemi og parfumerede produkter. Der mangler dog fortsat viden om sygdommen i både sundhedssystemet og befolkningen.

Forestil dig, at du ikke længere kan spise en række fødevarer, gå i supermarkeder og andre butikker, i fitnesscenter og svømmehal, på café og restaurant, i biografen, tage offentlig transport, opholde dig på sygehuset eller i lægens venteværelse, arbejde i storkontorer, få hjemmehjælp osv. på grund af dufte og kemi fra parfumerede produkter. Hvis du gør det, får du symptomer som hovedpine, vejrtrækningsbesvær, bylder i mund og svælg m.m. Sådan er det at leve med MCS.

Allergi, MCS og andre miljøsygdomme er blandt de hurtigst voksende globale sundhedsproblemer. Uanset om overfølsomheden kommer på grund af dufte, kemikalier, fødevarer eller stråling, er vi i stigende grad sensitive over for verden omkring os. De allermest syge tåler ikke længere deres nærmeste og lever helt isolerede i lukkede rum, hvor mad stilles uden for døren, eller de bor udenfor det meste af året i fx en campingvogn. Hverdagen er et konstant forhindringsløb for at undgå at blive syg af kontakt med mennesker, der bruger parfume, parfumeret vaskepulver og skyllemiddel, ryger og går i nyt, endnu ikke vasket tøj, samt af tryksværte, kopimaskiner, brænderøg, stege-os m.m.

Duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed er en sygdom, der enten kan komme snigende gennem ophobning af kemikalier over en årrække eller kan udløses af en akut forgiftning. Undersøgelser fra USA, Australien, Sverige og Japan viser, at mellem 10 og 35 procent af befolkningerne er overfølsomme over for dufte og kemi fra bl.a. parfume, rengøringsmidler og plejeprodukter. I Danmark vurderes det, at en ud af fem har kontaktallergi, 225.000 har parfumeallergi, og cirka 20.000 lider af duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed.1

Vi udsættes konstant for kemi

Vi udsættes dagligt for mere end 500 kemikalier, for kemi findes overalt. Kemi i fødevarer, pleje- og skønhedsprodukter, rengøringsmidler, tøj, møbler, biler, boliger, elektronik osv. kan være triggere for miljøsygdomme som allergi og MCS, men kemi fra naturen og naturlige produkter kan også give symptomer. Mange med MCS tåler fx ikke æteriske olier, som dog er nemmere at holde sig fra end de potentielt tusindvis af skadelige kemikalier i fx kosmetik-, pleje- og rengøringsprodukter, som bl.a. er kræftfremkaldende og giver problemer med stofskiftet, fertiliteten, huden og vejrtrækningen.

Det er veldokumenteret, at cocktaileffekten – dvs. kombinationen af al uønsket kemi lagt sammen – udgør en sundhedsrisiko. Den samlede udsættelse for kemiske stoffer, også de mindre farlige eller kemikalier i ellers ufarlige mængder, kan med andre ord være sygdomsfremkaldende.

I dokumentaren Toxic Beauty fra 2019 slås det fast, at du ikke kan vide, hvad der er i dine produkter, og at kosmetikindustrien er uskyldig, indtil det modsatte er bevist. Der findes ingen lovgivning for deklaration af kemikalier i produkterne, og som forbruger har du ikke en chance for at vide, hvad der gemmer sig bag ingredienser som fx fragrance (duftstoffer) og parfume. Undersøgelser viser, at der i en parfume kan være 10-300 duftstoffer, og at der ofte er flere skadelige kemikalier i skønheds- og plejeprodukter, end der er i rengøringsmidler. Der findes tusindvis af duftstoffer, som kan bruges i parfumerede produkter, og et par af de kræftfremkaldende er benzophenon, methyleugenol og beta-myrcen, mens nogle af de hormonforstyrrende inkluderer DEP, oxybenzon, octinoxat og galaxolid.2

Kemikalier i fødevarer er heller ikke ordentligt testet for deres sikkerhed og påvirkning af vores helbred. Mens fødevareintolerancer kan skyldes mangel på enzymer, kan en fællesnævner for alle overfølsomheder og ubalancer være i det autonome nervesystem, herunder vagusnerven, som bl.a. styrer vores fordøjelse.3

Konserveringsmidler og andre tilsætningsstoffer ikke mindst i fødevarer undertrykker sandsynligvis immunforsvaret. To ingredienser, tert-butylhydroquinon (TBHQ) og per- eller poly-fluoroalkyl substanser (PFAS), som også er kendt som ”evige kemikalier”, fordi de bliver i kroppen, er fundet i mere end 1.200 fødevarer, som sælges i USA, herunder i en række produkter fra Kellogg’s.

Meget få kemikalier, herunder PFAS, er undersøgt med hensyn til langtidseffekter på vores helbred. I 2019 annoncerede det amerikanske miljøagentur (EPA) et studie, der skal bidrage til en bedre forståelse af, hvordan PFAS kan hænge sammen med kræft, stofskiftesygdomme, immunundertrykkelse, lavere fertilitet og lav fødselsvægt.4

Ny viden om biomarkører for MCS

Dominique Belpomme, som er professor og medicinsk onkolog samt har en ph.d. i cellulær biologi, offentliggjorde sammen med et hold forskere i marts 2021 mere end 10 års viden indsamlet fra en database med over 2.000 mennesker med selvrapporteret MCS og Electromagnetic Hyper Sensitivity eller el-overfølsomhed (EHS). Forskerne konkluderer, at EHS og MCS fra nu af bør anerkendes som neurologiske sygdomme, fordi de kan diagnosticeres, behandles medicinsk og knyttes til eksponering for toksisk kemi og/eller stråler.

Biomarkører er bl.a. forhøjet C-reaktivt protein (CRP), øget histamin og øget immunoglobulin E. Desuden fandt de autoantistoffer mod O-myelin, som er et stof, der normalt beskytter nerveceller, men som hos 20 procent af MCS’erne er under angreb i en autoimmun proces. D3-vitamin, zink og antihistaminer har mange derfor et ekstra behov for.5

Mindre kemi, tak!

Mennesker med duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed møder ofte mistro fra omverdenen i deres dagligdag. Kan det være rigtigt, at du bliver syg af at være i nærheden af en person, der bærer tøj, som er vasket i parfumeret vaskemiddel? Kan det virkelig passe, at det kan være et problem, hvis du er sammen med en person, der har brugt hårlak to dage tidligere? Svaret er ja. MCS kan udløses af meget små mængder kemikalier – også mængder, der ligger langt under de godkendte grænseværdier.

Duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed er en usynlig sygdom og er derfor ikke kun en fysisk og psykisk belastning. Det tærer på kræfterne konstant at skulle forklare og forsvare sig over for folk, der ikke viser hensyn eller tror på én. Forståelse, hensyn og opbakning i hverdagen gør en stor forskel. Det er naturligt at tvivle på noget, man ikke kender, og alle med MCS har desværre oplevet at blive mødt med udtalelser som fx ”det lyder meget mærkeligt”, ”overreagerer du ikke lidt?” og ”er du sikker på, at det ikke bare er noget, du bilder dig ind?” Selvom der stadig mangler viden om MCS i befolkningen og sundhedsvæsenet, betyder det ikke, at MCS ikke eksisterer.

Dét, mange ikke forstår, er, at kemi er skadelig for alle på den lange bane. Derfor er det bedst for alt og alle at bruge mindre kemi i hverdagen. Du tager hensyn til det voksende antal mennesker, der bliver syge af dufte og kemi, og du tager samtidig også hensyn til dig selv, naturen og fremtidige generationer.

Regeringen har foreslået at afsætte 304 millioner kroner på finansloven over de næste fire år i kampen mod skadelig kemi.6 Samtidig vil de sætte yderligere fokus på ren luft i byerne, da luftforurening er årsag til mere end 4.000 dødsfald om året alene i Danmark.

FAKTA OM MCS

MCS står for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, som på dansk kaldes duft- og kemikalieoverfølsomhed, og er karakteriseret ved multisystemiske symptomer og intolerancer efter enten en større enkelteksponering eller længere tids eksponering for mindre mængder kemikalier.

Allergi og MCS er to forskellige tilstande. En parfumeallergiker vil få eksem på fx hænderne af hudkontakt med parfumeret sæbe, mens en MCS’er fx får hovedpine og bliver træt efter luftkontakt med parfumeret sæbe. Symptomerne kan variere fra person til person og være meget voldsomme. Det er afgørende, at man undgår at udsætte sig selv for eksponering for parfume og andre kemikalier for at mindske symptomerne.

I de sidste næsten 10 år har patienter med symptomer, der er relateret til dufte og kemiske stoffer, kunnet kodes med diagnosekoden DR688A1 fra Sundhedsvæsenets Klassifikationssystem (SKS), men det er stadig de færreste læger og speciallæger, der kender til sygdommen.

KEMI GØR FLERE SYGE

I USA er der i løbet af det sidste årti diagnosticeret 300 procent flere med MCS, mens den selvrapporterede kemiske overfølsomhed er steget med 200 procent. En undersøgelse viser, at der blandt 1.000 amerikanere er 12,8 procent, som er diagnosticeret med MCS, og 25,9 procent har selvrapporteret kemisk overfølsomhed, dvs. hver fjerde.

  • Flere end otte ud af 10, som har diagnosen MCS, oplever helbredsproblemer som fx migræne, når de eksponeres for parfumerede produkter.
  • Syv ud af 10 har også astma eller astmalignende sygdom og kan ikke være på steder med parfumerede produkter som fx luftfriskere.
  • Seks ud af 10 har mistet arbejdsdage eller jobbet det sidste år på grund af parfumerede produkter på arbejdspladsen.
  • Tre ud af fire med MCS ville ønske, der var duftpolitikker på arbejdspladser, og over 80 procent ville foretrække, at sundhedssystemet, læger og andre medarbejdere var parfumefri.
