Et grundigt blik på de seneste års videnskabelige artikler viser, at vi kan svare ja til samtlige ovenstående spørgsmål. Jern er et vigtige mineral for blodet og mange andre funktioner i kroppen. Jern er livsvigtig i alle livets faser.
Det starter i mors mave Mangel på jern hos gravide kan medføre permanente udviklingsskader i fosterets hjerne. Undersøgelser viser, hvordan man kan undgå hjerneskader ved behandling med jern-præparater under graviditeten.
Et lille foster er afhængig af sin mors sundhedsmæssige tilstand. Mange gravide kvinder – både i vesten, men især i udviklingslandene – mangler jern under graviditeten, og undersøgelser tyder på, at jernmangel kan give varige skader i fostrets hjerne under dets udvikling.
Moderne forskning har i stigende grad afsløret, at forholdene i livmoderen og den ernæring, fosteret modtager via moderen, kan have endog langsigtede konsekvenser for risikoen for sygdomme, og hvor godt et liv man kan se frem til.

Både drenge og piger har minus på jernkontoen i teenageårene, og hos pigerne fortsætter det også, selvom de runder de tyve år, så også studerende kan have god nytte af et mindre supple-ment med et letoptageligt jerntilskud.
Hos drengene er det især, mens de vokser og udvikler sig, at det kan nytte at give dem tilskud.
Konsekvenserne af jernmangel er træthed, ugidelighed, manglende opmærksomhed og nærvær – så måske de ”sløve” teenagere i virkeligheden blot har brug for jern.
Når puberteten sætter ind med pludselig vækst og udvikling af kroppen, er behovet for jern øget, så alle de nye celler kan blive dannet i en fart.
Et simpelt jerntilskud er måske lige præcis det frustrerede forældre skal tage i brug for at få den unge op af sofaen og i gang med lektier og sunde interesser.
Dokumentation 1: En god bøf gør underværker… eller?
En ny undersøgelse har set på, om oksekød eller en menu baseret på fjerkræ tre gange ugentligt kan påvirke jernstatus og dermed de kognitive evner og evnen til at løse problemer hos universitetsstuderende i alderen 18-30 år.
Begge typer af diæt kunne forbedre jernstatus og de kognitive evner, så om man vil have sit behov for jern dækket via bøffen eller et tilskud, er en smagssag, men effekten af jern i forbindelse med problemløsning og hukommelse kan ikke diskuteres. Jern skal der til.
Hvad med psykiatrien? De kognitive evner er jo kun én side af hjernes egenskaber – hvad med den følelsesmæssige udvikling blandt børn og unge? En ny stor undersøgelse kaster lys over en spændende sammenhæng mellem jernmangel og psykiatriske problemer.
Undersøgelsen er observerende og kan kun fortælle om sammenfald mellem ernæringsstatus og visse helbredsproblemer, men ikke endeligt fastslå, hvad årsagen er til dem.
Næsten 3000 patienter med jernmangelanæmi (blodmangel) blev sammenlignet med en matchet kontrolgruppe, og på en lang række områder var jernmangel forbundet med psykiatriske problemer fx: depression, bipolar sygdom (manio-depressivitet), angst, autisme spektrum, ADHD, tics og hæmmet udvikling.
Interessant nok var mineralet jern et af de første stoffer, der fik en positiv bedømmelse med på vejen af de europæiske sundhedsforskere og blandt de godkendte udsagn var, at ”jern bidrager til en normal kognitiv funktion”.
Det er vigtigt for os alle sammen, men især for børn og unge, der både skal lære om verden og lære at begå sig i verden.
