Skeptiske forbrugere og skrappe myndigheder spænder ben for berigede fødevarer i Danmark. Men er det egentlig ikke en god idé?

Mens det i udlandet er et hit med kunstigt forbedret mad og berigede fødevarer, synes danskerne at have få et functional foods galt i halsen fra starten af. Men er mad tilsat vitaminer, mineraler eller sundhedsgavnlige bakterier så galt endda, når for eksempel ni ud af ti danskere ifølge DTU Fødevareinstituttet får for lidt D-vitamin? Allerede for 10 år siden udgav de danske myndigheder en diger rapport, som hed “D-vitaminstatus i den danske befolkning bør forbedres . Og i 2013 sagde fødevareministeren “Vi står med et folkesundhedsproblem, der skal løses”. Men hvad er en god løsning?
Fødevarer tilsat vitaminer og mineraler er med få undtagelser ikke til at finde på hylderne i danske butikker, selv om store grupper i befolkningen behøver ekstra vitaminer. For eksempel ligger vi næsten alle sammen lidt på den lade side med indtaget af vitamin D. Især indvandrere med mørk hud og ældre over 65 der har været tale om usunde produkter, der sminkes med vitaminer. Måske derfor har functional food fået sit dårlige omdømme?
Forbrugerne i Danmark og de øvrige nordiske lande reagerer over en kam med skepsis mod fødevarer tilsat vitaminer eller mineraler. Functional foods opfattes primært som noget kunstigt. En undersøgelse fra fødevarecentret MAPP ved Handelshøjskolen i Århus i samarbejde med fødevare-instituttet på Danmarks Teknologiske Institut (DTU) fra 2008 viser, at mange mener nærmest per instinkt, at et produkt, som er forsynet med tilsatte vitaminer, må være dårligere end et ”normalt” produkt. I undersøgelsen medvirkede 500 forbrugere fra Island og 1000 fra hvert af de øvrige fire nordiske lande.
Et tilskud med vitamin D og calcium kan forebygge 20 til 30 % af alle de knoglebrud, der sker som følge af knogleskørhed. Samtidig ville tilskuddet gøre de ældres muskler stærkere, så 10 % færre ville falde og komme til skade, har en rapport fra Danmarks Fødevareforskning vist. Fødevarestyrelsen vil derfor have ekstra vitamin D i fødevarer, som stort set alle spiser, nemlig brød og mejeriprodukter. For at gøre befolkningen sundere.
De berigede fødevarer, altså mad- eller drikkevarer, der er tilsat ekstra vitaminer eller mineraler, var forbudt i Danmark indtil en dom ved EU-domstolen i 2003 slog fast, at forbuddet stred mod EU-reglerne.
Kolos fra Mezina indeholder 30 μg vitamin D pr. tablet og 250 mg calcium.
