Huden har to funktioner, den er et sanseorgan og en barriere. For at huden kan fungere som en optimal barriere, skal den være blød, smidig og elastisk. På den måde kan huden give efter uden at sprække, være vandafvisende og samtidig modstandsdygtig over for infektioner.

Forestil dig, at din hud er som en mur, der bliver holdt sammen af en speciel mørtel. Mørtlen er ikke hård og fast som beton, men mere eftergivelig som harpiks. Murstenene svarer til de yderste hudceller, der er fulde af hornstof (et protein, der hedder keratin, der også opbygger hår og negle), som giver huden styrke og beskyttelse. Den specielle mørtel gør, at muren er eftergivelig og virker mere som et medgørligt net end som en stenhård mur.

Skadet hud, som fx hud med eksem eller psoriasis, mangler den elastiske mørtel, og der kommer derfor nemt ”huller i muren”, som tillader invasion af bakterier og svampe. Derfor er det vigtigt at få gjort muren intakt igen og gjort den mere modstandsdygtig.

Hvis din hud er tynd, tør og skællende, som det ses ved eksem og andre hudproblematikker, er der altså en øget tendens til infektioner. Du kan sagtens behandle infektionen i huden, men så kommer du ikke af med den tørre hud. Hvis du derimod fugter og behandler den tørre hud, kan du undgå, at infektionen opstår.

Squalene fra olivenolie smører huden

Fra talgkirtlerne i huden kommer der naturligt fedt til huden. Man har fundet ud af, at ca. 12 % af det naturlige fedtstof indeholder squalene, et flerumættet fedtstof. Indholdet af squalene i fedtstoffet i huden falder efter 40 -års alderen. Forskellige olier indeholder squalene, heriblandt olivenolie, solsikkeolie, majsolie, peanutolie og frøene fra  amarant-planten.

Squalene kan ikke påføres direkte på huden, da squalene ikke er et stabilt stof, der kan opbevares som kosmetisk produkt i længere tid. Den kemiske sammensætning gør nemlig, at det kan oxidere andre stoffer (det indeholder nemlig dobbeltbindinger), og det vil på den made lave ravage i en creme. For at komme uden om det problem bruger man et andet stof, der hedder squalane, der ikke har dobbeltbindingerne. Problemet er dog, at det så ikke har den beskyttende effekt, som den naturlige squalene i huden. Heldigvis inde holder vores egen hud en familie af enzymer (dehydrogenaser), der selv kan lave de dobbeltbindinger og dermed omdanne squalane til squalene. På den måde kan vi have et inaktivt stof i en creme, som bliver gjort aktivt i huden.

Den rette og milde hudpleje

For at pleje din hud skal du sørge for, at mørtlen har den rette sammensætning af blandt andet fedtstoffer. Samtidig er det også vigtigt, at man drikker rigeligt vand, så huden bliver fugtet og elastisk indefra.
