Den 4. august 2014 offentliggjorde et forskerteam fra det Karolinske Institut i Stockholm og Panum Instituttet, Københavns Universitet, at en lav dosis alkohol svarende til et glas rødvin eller en snaps stimulerer væksten af γδ T-immunceller. γδ T-celler er immun-forsvarsceller i bl.a. ledvæsken, som er med til at bekæmpe processen ved leddegigt.
Man håber, at undersøgelsen på sigt vil give en større forståelse af de dokumenterede virkninger, alkohol har på inflammatoriske lidelser.
Lav til moderat alkoholindtag er kendt som havende en beskyttende virkning mod autoimmune sygdomme som rheumatiod arthritis (leddegigt). En reumatologisk betændelse er en kronisk tilstand, dvs. den går ikke over og skal indtil videre behandles livslangt for de fleste patienters vedkommende.
I det dansk-svenske studie stimulerede forskerne lymfocytterne fra inflammerede knæled hos patienter med rheumatoid arthritis (leddegigt) in vitro med isopentenyl pyrophosfat (IPP). Det, man fandt, var, at når man tilføjede ethanol til en bestemt dosis isopentenyl pyrophosfat reagerede immuncellerne meget bedre. Den synergistiske effekt mellem ethanol og en bestemt mængde IPP øgede simpelthen antallet af kompe-tente γδ T-immunceller.
Forsøget er det første af sin art, hvor man med alkohol stimulerer mængden af bestemte immunceller fra humane led in vitro. IPP stimuleret ledvæske har vist sig at virke beskyttende mod fibroblastlignende synoviocytter (FLS). FLS -cellerne spiller en afgørende rolle i udviklingen af kroniske inflammatoriske sygdomme, såsom rheumatisk arthritis. Forskerne mener, at synergien mellem IPP og ethanol gør immunreaktionen målrettet mod FLS-cellerne, og man håber på, at kombinationen ligeledes vil kunne virke generelt mod autoimmune sygdomme.
Ethanol samt ethylalkohol, ætylalkohol eller vinånd er en organisk forbindelse med sumformlen CH3CH2OH, som forkortes EtOH. Det er en farveløs, brandfarlig væske med en stikkende lugt. Ethanol bruges til spiritus, vin, øl, samt som opløsningsmiddel i den kemiske industri.
Ethanol bliver i dagligdagssproget også kaldt alkohol eller sprit. Ethanol blev også tidligere kaldt for vinånd, men denne betegnelse bruges stort set ikke i dag.
