Læger kan ved at måle blodets indhold af stoffet NT-proBNP forudsige patienters risiko for hjertesvigt. Desværre bruges metoden for lidt. Forskning viser desuden, at en kombination af to næringsstoffer kan mindske indholdet af netop dette stof og dermed beskytte hjertet.

Når hjertet af forskellige årsager arbejder uforholdsmæssigt hårdt for at pumpe blod rundt i kroppen, bliver det ”stresset”. I den forbindelse øges hjertets udskillelse af stoffet NT-proBNP i blodet. Det er en slags biomarkør for, hvor belastet hjertet er. En blodprøve kan derfor vise, hvem der har særlig høj risiko for, at hjertet bukker under. Selv om brugen af denne målemetode her i landet blev skrevet ind i behandlingsvejledningen forrige år, bliver den ikke anvendt i det omfang, mange læger kunne ønske sig. Det er nemlig sådan, at hvis man ved hjælp af denne blodprøve kan udvælge de patienter, som er i risikogruppen, kan man sikre dem den rigtige behandling i tide, og det kan forlænge deres liv og forbedre livskvaliteten.
Naturlig måde at sænke NT-proBNP på
Særlig interessant er det banebrydende forsøg fra 2013, der viser, hvordan dagligt tilskud af de to stoffer, selen og coenzym Q10, kan reducere blodets indhold af NT-proBNP og derfor har en hjertebeskyttende effekt. Forsøget er udført af en gruppe svenske hjertelæger og forskere fra Universitetet i Linköping samt Karolinska Institutet i Stockholm. De udvalgte tilfældigt 443 raske ældre mænd og kvinder, som de inddelte i to grupper. Den ene gruppe fik snydepiller, imens den anden fik præparaterne SelenoPrecise (patenteret organisk selengær) og Bio-Qinon Q10 (coenzym Q10).
Stærkere hjertemuskel
I fire år skulle forsøgsdeltagerne tage pillerne. Herefter blev resultaterne gjort op, og forskerne kunne til deres store overraskelse se, at blodindholdet af NT-proBNP hos dem, der havde taget selen og coenzym Q10, var markant lavere, end det var hos dem, der tog snydepillerne. Det vil sige, at deres hjertemuskel arbejdede mere ubesværet, hvilket naturligvis er et sundhedstegn. At hjertemusklen var stærkere og mere velfungerende, blev desuden bekræftet med ultralydsmålinger.
54 % lavere hjerte-kar-dødelighed
Forskerne var dog mest imponeret over den 54 % reducerede hjerte-kar-dødelighed blandt dem, der fik selen og coenzym Q10 i forhold til dem, der fik snydepiller. En så markant reduktion har aldrig tidligere været påvist i nogen videnskabelig undersøgelse af en enkelt behandling.
Hjælper patienter med hjertesvigt
I 2014 viste en anden undersøgelse noget tilsvarende. 420 patienter med diagnosticeret hjertesvigt medvirkede i undersøgelsen, som strakte sig over to år. Halvdelen fik snydepiller, og den anden halvdel fik 300 mg af præparatet Bio-Qinon Q10. Begge grupper fortsatte med den medicinske behandling, de i forvejen havde fået ordineret. Igen observerede man et reduceret blod-indhold af NT-proBNP hos de Q10-behandlede i forhold til placebo-gruppen, og der var samtidig en 43 % lavere dødelighed af hjertesvigt hos dem, der havde fået Q10. Disse resultater stod helt alene og havde intet med den medicinske behandling at gøre, skrev forskerne.
