C-vitamin beskytter nyfødte mod mødrenes rygning

 

 

Amerikanske forskere har med en ny undersøgelse demonstreret, at tilskud af C-vitamin givet til rygende gravide kan forbedre luftvejsfunktionen hos de nyfødte.

Det kan ikke siges tydeligt nok: Det er på alle måder forkert at ryge, hvis du er gravid. Tobaksrøg indeholder et hav af skadelige stoffer, som kan påvirke fostret i negativ retning. For eksempel ved man, at lungefunktionen hos børn, hvis mødre har røget under deres graviditet, er nedsat. Til gengæld har en gruppe amerikanske forskere påvist, at hvis man som gravid ryger får et dagligt tilskud af C-vitamin i tabletform, kan det forbedre lungefunktionen hos den nyfødte.

 

500 mg C-vitamin dagligt

I den amerikanske undersøgelse blev 251 gravide rygere tilfældigt inddelt i to grupper i perioden imellem den 13. og 23. graviditetsuge. Halvdelen af kvinderne fik 500 mg C-vitamin dagligt, og den anden fik snydepiller. Hverken de gravide eller forskerne vidste, hvem som fik hvad, før efter undersøgelsen var afsluttet, og resultatet blev gjort op.

 

Bedre lungefunktion

Ved hjælp af specialudstyr målte forskerne lungefunktionen hos børnene tre måneder efter fødslen. Ud fra disse målinger kunne de se, at hos børn, hvis mødre havde fået dagligt C-vitamintilskud under graviditeten, var lungefunktionen bedre end hos de børn, hvis mødre ikke havde fået vitamintilskuddet.

 

Kraftig antioxidant

Det er ikke afklaret, hvordan C-vitamin beskytter lungefunktionen. Det skyldes formodentligt, at C-vitamin er en kraftigt virkende antioxidant, der hæmmer dannelsen af de vævsskadelige frie radikaler, rygning forårsager i kroppen. Af samme grund har forskere observeret, hvordan C-vitaminniveauet i blodet hos rygere er lavere end hos ikke-rygere.

Men drop rygningen uanset. Artiklen er interessant, fordi den viser, at næringsstoffer i den rette mængde kan gøre en forskel på fx luftvejene, men det er stadig meget skadeligt for fosteret at ryge uanset næringsindhold i blodet.

Hvor høje doser kan jeg tåle?

C-vitamin tilhører gruppen af vandopløselige vitaminer, som i modsætning til de fedtopløselige vitaminer ikke lagres i kroppens væv. Det betyder, at vi skal have dem tilført dagligt fra den mad, vi spiser eller fra andre kilder som kosttilskud.

Hvad mange ikke ved er, at kroppens optagelse af C-vitamin fra de fleste kosttilskud daler, i takt med at dosis øges. Den højeste optagelighed (næsten 100%) opnår man ved doser på 15-30 mg, hvilket er en ganske beskeden dosis. Ved doser på over et gram risikerer man dog, at helt op imod halvdelen af C-vitaminet går til spilde og ikke bliver optaget.

Man kan undgå den reducerede optagelighed ved at tage flere mindre doser i løbet af dagen eller anvende en C-vitaminkilde som calciumascorbat, der optages let, selv i høje doser. Præparatet Bio-C-Vitamin for eksempel indeholder 750 mg calciumascorbat i hver tablet. Det er et lægemiddel til forebyggelse og behandling af C-vitaminmangel og kan anvendes dagligt som tilskud til kosten.
