Siden 1950’erne har stoffet bisphenol A (PBA) været anvendt i fødevareemballage, personlige hygiejneprodukter, tandforsegligsmidler m.v., og alle mennesker udsættes for BPA via huden, indåndingsluften og fordøjelsessystemet. Uheldigis har stoffet en hormonforstyrrende indvirkning og kan blandt andet forårsage infertilitet hos såvel mænd som kvinder. Nu har forskere med en ny undersøgelse vist, at det vitaminbeslægtede stof coenzym Q10 muligvis har en beskyttende effekt. I forsøget, som er offentliggjort i tidsskriftet Toxicology and Industrial Health i juli i år, observerede forskerne blandt andet, at tilskud af coenzym Q10 øger aktiviteten af en bestemt type antioxidanter, der kaldes for glutathion (GSH) og superoxid dismutase (SOD), som beskytter sædceller.

 

Mere livlige sædceller

I en tidligere offentliggjort undersøgelse, hvor 60 ufrugtbare (men raske) mænd deltog, gav italienske forskere fra University of Marche i Ancona snydepiller til den ene halvdel af deltagerne og præparatet Bio-Qinon Q10 til den anden. Det viste sig, at sædcellerne var markant mere livlige i Q10-gruppen, hvilket er en vigtig faktor i forbindelse med frugtbarhed. Behandlingen øgede med andre ord sædcellernes bevægelighed, hvilket øger chancen for en effektiv befrugtning af ægget.

 

Blev fædre efterfølgende

I en anden undersøgelse, som inkluderede 22 ufrugtbare mænd i alderen 25-39 år, viste det sig, at daglig behandling med 400 mg coenzym Q10 (også præparatet Bio-Qinon Q10 fra Pharma Nord) i et halvt år havde en gunstig effekt. Det lykkedes for næsten 14 % af deltagerne at blive fædre efterfølgende. Undersøgelsen er offentliggjort i Fertility and Sterility i januar 2004.
