En dosis på 40 mg af Carotenoider har en signifikant effekt på reduktion af halsbrand. Virkningen var mest markant hos personer ramt af Helicobacter pylori bakterien, som skyldes sår i maven, viser en publiceret undersøgelse i det medicinske tidsskrift Phytomedicine.
“Dette er en randomiseret, dobbelt-blind, placebo-kontrolleret undersøgelse af antioxidanten Astaxanthin, der anvendes ved fordøjelsesbevær” skrev een af forfatterne til undersøgelsen, Limas Kupcinskas fra Kaunas University of Medicine i Litauen. “Hypotesen er, at den kraftige respons hos Helicobacter pylori positive patienter skyldes den reducerede stress i maven af Astaxanthin behandlingen og dermed også den mindre oxidative stress i spiserøret resulterende i en forbedring af symptomerne” tilføjede Kupcinskas. Astaxanthin er almindeligvis anvendt som et pigment til at forstærke den lyserøde farve i fisk som for eksempel laks. De sundhedsmæssige fordele er især relateret til øjne og hud, selvom det også har været kædet sammen med centralnervesystemets sundhed. Og der er bemærket en antioxidativ ydelse 500 gange større end vitamin E.
Ny undersøgelse
Forskerne fra Litauen, Sverige og Danmark fandt 132 patienter med fordøjelsesproblemer, og gav dem 16 og 40 mg Astaxanthin pr dag (Astaxin i Danmark) eller placebo i fire uger. Undersøgelsen var en kontrolleret, randomiseret og dobbelt-blind undersøgelse. Personerne var klassificeret som negative eller positive for Helicobacter pylori infektion. Ved afslutningen på de fire uger fandt Kupcinskas og hans forskere ingen signifikant forskel mellem de tre grupper med hensyn til de overordnede faktorer for mavesmerter, fordøjelse og reflux symptomer. Alligevel fandt de, da de fokuserede på reflux syndromet, en signifikant forbedring hos Astaxanthin-gruppen sammenlignet med de øvrige grupper. Endvidere var forbedringerne højere hos de Helicobacter pylori positive patienter. “Disse opdagelser er så interessante at de kræver yderligere undersøgelser,” skrev forskerne.
Statistik
Ifølge “US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health” lider 20 procent af den amerikanske befolkning af spiserørsrelateret halsbrand. Studier i Danmark, Irland, England, Sverige og Australien viser, at forekomsten af mavesårsbakterien varierer fra land til land. Rapporter viser variation fra 26 til 43 procent.
